What is the mark that looks like a scratch?

Fine grey lines, particularly visible on pale plates, are often not scratches in the porcelain but microscopic particles transferred from metal cutlery. The dense, high-fired porcelain body and hard glaze can make traces from the softer metal visible.

A mark therefore does not mean that the plate has cracked or that its glaze is no longer safe to use. If the surface remains smooth, what you see is most likely metal transfer sitting on the porcelain.

The strength of porcelain

With its low porosity, hardness and easy-to-clean surface, porcelain performs exceptionally well at home and in intensive professional use. Though it can appear fine and delicate, the right form and firing give it considerable strength.

Metal-transfer marks can usually be removed gently with a mild, non-abrasive cleaner. Avoiding wire pads and heavily abrasive products helps preserve porcelain’s sheen and smooth surface over time.
